April 26 - International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes
The International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes is marked in the majority of the countries today. The memorable date – the 26th of April – is chosen not accidentally. The largest man-caused catastrophe in the history of the mankind – the accident at Chernobyl – has occurred on this very day in 1986.
The Chernobyl accident was not only a great tragedy and a major environmental catastrophe of the 20th century, but also a lesson to all mankind, showing that out-of-control nuclear power does not recognize borders. Unfortunately, it echoes will be heard for a long time and affect more than one generation of people. |
